Therapeutic indications
Treatment of constipation in children
Contraindications
• Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or to any of the excipients. • Laxatives should not be used by subjects with acute abdominal pain or pain of unknown origin, nausea or vomiting, marked accentuation or reduction of peristalsis, rectal bleeding. The presence of one or more excipients may increase the risk of constipation in children. The presence of these symptoms or signs requires an adequate diagnostic investigation by the doctor in order to exclude one of the pathological conditions that contraindicate the use of laxatives (for example: intestinal obstruction, stenosis or perforation, paralytic ileus, severe inflammatory bowel disease). Severe dehydration.
Dosage
Children over 8 years of age and weighing more than 20 kg 2-4 full measuring spoons per day (the measuring spoon measures 2.5 g at the mark and 5 g when full). Do not exceed the maximum daily dosage of 20 g of macrogol. Children over 2 years of age and weighing less than 20 kg The usual starting dose is 0.7 g/kg per day. Table for calculating the dose of Regolint in children up to 20 kg
Body weight (kg) Daily dose no. of measuring spoons
6-9 5 g 1
10-12 7.5 g 1 ½
13-16 10 g 2
17-20 12.5 g 2 ½
The indicated dose must be adjusted according to individual response. Increases or reductions of ½ or 1 measuring spoon compared to the dose indicated in the table are recommended. The correct dose is the minimum sufficient to produce easy evacuation of soft stools. It is advisable to initially use the minimum recommended doses. The daily dose can be taken in one or two fractions, away from meals. Sometimes two days (or more) may be necessary before obtaining the desired effect. The duration of treatment is limited to 3 months; in any case, the patient must follow the doctor's prescription. The contents of one measuring spoon (5 g) should be dissolved in at least half a glass of water (about 60 ml). Do not add other ingredients. It is best to drink the entire dose quickly (within a few minutes), avoiding prolonged sipping. A diet rich in liquids promotes the effect of the medicine.
Warnings and Precautions
Warnings: Laxative abuse (frequent or prolonged use or excessive doses), particularly contact or stimulant laxatives, can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium), and other essential nutrients. In more severe cases, dehydration or hypokalemia may occur, which can lead to cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction, especially in the case of concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics, or corticosteroids. Caution should be exercised in patients with renal insufficiency or heart failure. In these cases, it is advisable to periodically monitor serum electrolyte levels. Laxative abuse, especially contact laxatives (stimulant laxatives), can cause dependence (and, therefore, the possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation, and loss of normal intestinal function (intestinal atony). REGOLINT, as it does not contain any sugars or polyols, can be taken by diabetic patients or patients undergoing a galactose-free diet. Precautions for use: Further diagnostic tests are necessary when the need for a laxative arises from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that lasts more than two weeks, or when laxative use fails to produce effects.
Interactions
Laxatives can reduce the residence time in the intestine and therefore the absorption of other drugs administered simultaneously orally. Therefore, avoid taking laxatives and other medications at the same time: after taking a medication, wait at least two hours before taking the laxative. The use of licorice increases the risk of hypokalemia.
Side effects
Gastrointestinal disorders Common: abdominal distension, nausea. Uncommon: abdominal pain, rectal irritation, vomiting. Rare: severe diarrhea. General disorders Very rare: hypersensitivity reactions. They may manifest as: itching, skin rashes, hives, or edema (swelling, especially of the face or hands; swelling or tingling of the lips or throat), difficulty breathing. In these cases, stop taking the medicine and consult a doctor immediately.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies on the use of the medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Therefore, the medicine should be used only when necessary, under the direct supervision of a doctor, after evaluating the expected benefit for the mother in relation to the possible risk to the fetus or infant.
