Product Description

Syrup to facilitate intestinal evacuation

Indications

Lactulose Zenitiva contains the active ingredient lactulose, a sugar that belongs to a group of medicines called laxatives, used to facilitate the elimination of stool from the intestine (evacuation). This medicine is indicated for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation.

Contact your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 7 days.

Composition

The active ingredient is lactulose. 100 ml of syrup contains 66.7 g of lactulose. The other ingredients are: sodium benzoate, purified water.

Directions for use and Dosage

Adults: The recommended dose is 1 tablespoon - 1 and a half tablespoons of syrup (10 - 15 g of lactulose) per day divided into two doses. The dose can be increased by 1 hour. The recommended dose may be doubled or halved depending on the response to treatment and your health conditions.

Children: The recommended dose is 1 to 4 teaspoons (2.5 - 10 g of lactulose) per day, even in a single administration, according to medical prescription, depending on the age and severity of the case.

Infant: The recommended dose is 1 teaspoon (2.5 g of lactulose) per day, according to medical prescription.

Warnings

Laxative abuse (frequent or prolonged use or excessive doses) can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients. In more serious cases, dehydration or hypokalemia may occur, which can lead to serious complications. This medicine may cause cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction, especially in case of concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics, or corticosteroids. Abuse of laxatives, especially contact laxatives (stimulant laxatives), can cause dependence (and, therefore, the possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation, and loss of normal intestinal function (intestinal atony). Precautions for use: In children under 2 years of age, the medicine should be used only after consulting a doctor. The treatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires medical intervention for diagnosis, prescription of medications, and monitoring during therapy. Consult your doctor when the need for a laxative arises from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that lasts more than two weeks, or when the use of the laxative fails to produce effects. It is also advisable for elderly or otherwise unhealthy individuals to consult their doctor before using the medicine. In patients experiencing symptoms caused by excessive intestinal bloating, it is advisable to start treatment with the minimum indicated doses; these doses may be gradually increased based on the patient's response.
For further information, read the package leaflet carefully.

Interactions

Laxatives can reduce the residence time in the intestine, and therefore the absorption, of other drugs administered orally at the same time. Therefore, avoid taking laxatives and other medications at the same time: after taking a medication, wait at least 2 hours before taking the laxative. In particular, the simultaneous combination of tetracyclines should be avoided. Broad-spectrum antibacterial agents, administered orally at the same time as lactulose, can reduce its degradation, limiting the possibility of acidification of the intestinal contents and consequently the therapeutic efficacy.

Side effects

Occasionally: isolated cramping pain or abdominal colic, more frequent in cases of severe constipation. Flatulence. In rare cases, lactulose can cause meteorism and abdominal cramps, usually mild and which resolve spontaneously after the first few days of treatment. Otherwise, a dose reduction is advisable.

Overdoses

Excessive doses can cause abdominal pain and diarrhea; the resulting loss of fluids and electrolytes must be replaced. See also the section "Special warnings and precautions for use" regarding laxative abuse.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies on the use of the medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Therefore, the medicine should be used only when necessary, under the direct supervision of a doctor, after evaluating the expected benefit for the mother in relation to the possible risk to the fetus or infant.
