Product Description

Oral Solution

Composition:

100 ml of solution contain: Active ingredient: Lactulose 66.7 g For excipients, see section 6.1

Excipients

Sodium benzoate, purified water.

Therapeutic indications

Short-term treatment of occasional constipation.

Contraindications

Galactosemia. Known individual hypersensitivity to components and substances closely related from a chemical point of view. Gastrointestinal obstruction. Laxatives are contraindicated in subjects with acute or unknown origin abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, intestinal obstruction or stenosis, rectal bleeding of unknown origin, severe dehydration. Generally contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. (see section 4.6).

Dosage

1 tablespoon = 15 ml = 10 g of lactulose; 1 teaspoon = 5 ml = 3.3 g of lactulose Adults: The average daily dosage is 1 tablespoon. This dosage can be doubled or halved depending on individual response or clinical condition. Children: The average daily dosage is 2 teaspoons, even in a single dose, depending on the age and severity of the case, at the doctor's discretion. Infants: The average daily dosage is 1 teaspoon at the doctor's discretion. The correct dose is the minimum sufficient to produce easy evacuation of soft stools. It is advisable to initially use the minimum recommended doses. When necessary, the dose can then be increased, but never exceeding the maximum indicated. Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days. Use for longer periods requires a doctor's prescription after appropriate assessment of the individual case. The medicine should preferably be taken in the morning on an empty stomach or in the evening before a meal. Lactulose is absorbed very little and has no caloric value. However, LACTULOSE ACTAVIS contains, in addition to lactulose, galactose, lactose, and small amounts of other sugars. This must be taken into account when treating diabetic patients and patients on low-calorie diets.

Warnings and precautions

Laxative abuse can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium), and other essential nutrients. In more severe cases, dehydration or hypokalemia may occur, which can lead to serious complications. Cause cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction, especially in case of concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics, or corticosteroids. Abuse of laxatives, especially contact laxatives (stimulant laxatives), can cause dependence (and, therefore, the possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation, and loss of normal intestinal function (intestinal atony). Although the active ingredient in LACTULOSE ACTAVIS is a poorly absorbable and non-metabolized sugar, due to the presence of other sugars such as lactose, galactose, and tegatose, diabetic patients should consult a doctor. Continued use of laxatives can cause addiction or other types of damage. If constipation is persistent, consult your doctor. Do not use the medicine if abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting are present. In children under 12 years of age, the medicine should be used only after consulting a doctor. In patients experiencing symptoms caused by excessive intestinal bloating, it is advisable to begin treatment with the minimum recommended doses; these doses may be gradually increased based on the patient's response. Treatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires medical intervention for diagnosis, medication prescription, and monitoring during therapy. Consult your doctor when the need for a laxative arises from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that lasts more than two weeks or when laxative use fails to produce effects. Elderly or otherwise unhealthy individuals should consult their doctor before using the medicine.

Interactions

Laxatives can reduce the residence time in the intestine, and therefore the absorption, of other medications administered orally at the same time. Therefore, avoid taking laxatives and other medications at the same time: after taking a medication, wait at least 2 hours before taking the laxative. Broad-spectrum antibacterial agents and antiadics, administered orally at the same time as lactulose, can reduce its degradation, limiting the possibility of acidification of the intestinal contents and, consequently, therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, an increase in the activity of lactulose is possible if it is administered simultaneously with neomycin. The drug may cause an increase in digitalis toxicity due to potassium loss.

Side effects

Occasionally: isolated cramping pain or abdominal colic, more frequent in cases of severe constipation. In rare cases, LACTULOSE ACTAVIS can cause the production of excessive intestinal gas and abdominal cramps, usually mild, which resolve spontaneously after the first few days of treatment. Treatment should only be discontinued if diarrhea occurs.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies on the use of the medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Therefore, the medicine should be used only when necessary, under the direct supervision of a doctor, after weighing the expected benefit for the mother against the possible risk to the fetus or infant.
