Contraindicated in subjects with galactosemia.
Dosage
Adults: The average daily dosage is 10-15 g in two doses. This dosage can be doubled or halved depending on individual response or clinical picture. Children: 2.5 to 10 g/day, even in a single dose, depending on age and severity of the case. Infants: an average of 2.5 g per day. LACTULOSE PENSA granules for oral solution can be administered dissolved in water or diluted appropriately in milk or other beverages. Swallow with an adequate amount of water (a large glass). A diet rich in liquids promotes the effect of the medicine. Lactulose is absorbed in very small amounts and has no caloric value. However, in addition to lactulose, LATTULOSIO PENSA also contains galactose, lactose, and small amounts of other sugars. This must be taken into account when treating diabetic patients and patients on low-calorie diets. The correct dose is the minimum sufficient to produce easy evacuation of soft stools. It is advisable to initially use the minimum recommended doses. When necessary, the dose can then be increased, but never exceeding the maximum recommended dose. It is best to take it in the evening. Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days. Use for longer periods requires a doctor's prescription after appropriate evaluation of the individual case.
Warnings and Precautions
Warnings. Do not use the medicine if you experience abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting. If constipation persists, consult a doctor. In patients experiencing symptoms caused by excessive intestinal bloating, treatment should be started with the minimum recommended doses; these doses may be gradually increased based on the patient's response. Laxative abuse (frequent or prolonged use, or excessive doses) can cause persistent diarrhea, resulting in loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium), and other essential nutrients. In more severe cases, dehydration or hypokalemia (decreased blood potassium) may occur, which can lead to cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction, especially if concomitantly treated with cardiac glycosides, diuretics, or corticosteroids. Laxative abuse, especially contact laxatives (stimulant laxatives), can cause dependence (and thus the possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation, and loss of normal intestinal function (intestinal atony). Precautions for use: The treatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires medical intervention for diagnosis, medication prescription, and monitoring during therapy. Consult your doctor when the need for a laxative arises from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that lasts more than two weeks or when laxative use fails to produce effects. It is also advisable for elderly or otherwise unhealthy individuals to consult their doctor before using the medicine. In children under 12 years of age, the medicine should be used only after consulting a doctor.
Interactions
Broad-spectrum antibacterial agents, administered orally at the same time as lactulose, can reduce its degradation, limiting the possibility of acidification of the intestinal contents and consequently therapeutic efficacy. Laxatives can reduce the residence time in the intestine, and therefore the absorption, of other drugs administered orally at the same time. Therefore, avoid taking laxatives and other drugs at the same time: after taking a medicine, wait at least 2 hours before taking the laxative.
Side effects
Occasionally: isolated cramping pain or abdominal colic, more frequent in cases of severe constipation. Occasionally: flatulence.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies on the use of the medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Therefore, the medicine should be used only when necessary, under the direct supervision of a doctor, after weighing the expected benefit for the mother against the possible risk to the fetus or infant.
