Product Description

Lactulose EG 66.7% Syrup

Composition

100 ml of syrup contain: Active ingredient: Lactulose 66.7 g

Excipients

Sodium benzoate.

Therapeutic indications

Short-term treatment of occasional constipation.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or to any of the excipients. Laxatives are contraindicated in subjects with acute or unknown abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, intestinal obstruction or stenosis, rectal bleeding of unknown origin, severe dehydration. Contraindicated in subjects with galactosemia. Generally contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding (see p. 4.6). Generally contraindicated in children (see p. 4.4)

Dosage

The correct dose is the minimum sufficient to produce easy evacuation of soft stools. It is advisable to initially use the minimum recommended doses. When necessary, the dose can then be increased, but without ever exceeding the maximum indicated. Take preferably in the evening. Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days. Use for longer periods of time requires a doctor's prescription after adequate evaluation of the individual case. Ingest together with an adequate quantity of water (a large glass). A diet rich in liquids promotes the effect of the medicine. Adults: the average daily dosage is 10 - 15 g in two administrations. This dosage can be doubled or halved depending on the individual response or clinical picture. Children: 2.5 to 10 g/day, even in a single dose, depending on the age and severity of the case. Infants: on average 2.5 g per day. Lactulose is absorbed in very small quantities and has no caloric value. However, LACTULOSE EG contains, in addition to lactulose, galactose, lactose, and small amounts of other sugars. This must be taken into account when treating diabetic patients and patients on low-calorie diets.

Warnings and precautions

Warnings: Laxative abuse (frequent or prolonged use or excessive doses) can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium), and other essential nutrients. In more severe cases, dehydration or hypokalemia may occur, which can lead to serious complications. This medicine may cause cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction, especially in case of concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics, or corticosteroids. Abuse of laxatives, especially contact laxatives (stimulant laxatives), can cause dependence (and, therefore, the possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation, and loss of normal intestinal function (intestinal atony). Precautions for use: In children under 12 years of age, the medicine should be used only after consulting a doctor. The treatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires medical intervention for diagnosis, prescription of medications, and monitoring during therapy. Consult your doctor when the need for a laxative arises from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that lasts more than two weeks, or when laxative use fails to produce effects. Elderly or unhealthy individuals should also consult their doctor before using the medicine. Do not use the medicine if abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting are present. In patients experiencing symptoms caused by excessive intestinal bloating, it is advisable to start treatment with the minimum indicated doses; these doses may be gradually increased based on the patient's response.

Interactions

Laxatives can reduce the residence time in the intestine, and therefore the absorption, of other drugs administered orally at the same time. Therefore, avoid taking laxatives and other drugs at the same time: after taking a medicine, wait at least 2 hours before taking the laxative. Broad-spectrum antibacterial agents, administered orally at the same time as lactulose, can reduce its degradation, limiting the possibility of acidification of the intestinal contents and consequently the therapeutic efficacy.

Side effects

Occasionally: isolated cramping pain or abdominal colic, more frequent in cases of severe constipation. Occasionally: flatulence. Bloating and abdominal cramps, usually mild, subside spontaneously after the first few days of treatment. Otherwise, a dose reduction is advisable.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies on the use of the medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Therefore, the medicine should be used only when necessary, under the direct supervision of a doctor, after weighing the expected benefit for the mother against the possible risk to the fetus or infant.
