Generally contraindicated in pediatric age (see p. 4.4).
Dosage
Adults: one bottle. Children (over 2 years): half a bottle. Never exceed the indicated dose. The bottle is dissolved in 50 ml of water (4 tablespoons), half a bottle in 25 ml of water (2 tablespoons). Shake, wait until the effervescence has stopped, the drink is warmed and drink lukewarm. Preferably take in the evening. A diet rich in liquids promotes the effect of the medicine. Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days. Use for longer periods of time requires a doctor's prescription after adequate evaluation of the individual case.
Warnings and precautions
Warnings Laxative abuse (frequent or prolonged use with excessive doses) can cause serious side effects. Cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium), and other essential nutrients. In more severe cases, dehydration or hypokalemia may occur, which can lead to cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction, especially in the case of concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics, or corticosteroids. Abuse of laxatives, especially contact laxatives (stimulant laxatives), can cause dependence (and, therefore, the possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation, and loss of normal intestinal function (intestinal atony). Precautions for use: Magnesium salts should be administered with caution in patients being treated with digitalis glycosides. The preparation contains sucrose; use with caution in patients with diabetes or on low-calorie diets. In children under 12 years of age, the medicine should be used only after consulting a doctor. The treatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires medical intervention for diagnosis, medication prescription, and monitoring during therapy. Consult your doctor when the need for a laxative arises from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that lasts more than two weeks or when the use of the laxative fails to produce effects. It is also advisable for elderly or unhealthy individuals to consult their doctor before using the medicine.
Interactions
Laxatives can reduce the residence time in the intestine, and therefore the absorption, of other drugs administered orally at the same time. Therefore, avoid taking laxatives and other medications at the same time: after taking a medicine, wait at least two hours before taking the laxative.
Side effects
Occasionally: isolated cramping pain or abdominal colic, more severe. frequent in cases of severe constipation. Continued use, especially in the presence of kidney dysfunction, can cause magnesium accumulation in the body, with a series of side effects, including dizziness and lightheadedness.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies on the use of the medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Therefore, the medicine should be used only when necessary, under the direct supervision of a doctor, after weighing the expected benefit to the mother against the possible risk to the fetus or infant.
