Selenium is a trace mineral present in humans. It is present as selenocysteine in selenoproteins, the major families of which include glutathione peroxidase, thioredoxin reductase, and iodothyronine deiodinase. As a cofactor of these different selenoproteins, selenium is implicated in various aspects of thyroid homeostasis.
The presence of selenium in the form of L-selenomethionine guarantees good bioavailability accompanied by a lower risk of toxicity, making it suitable for long-term use. Bioperine is a standardized black pepper extract containing piperine. Bioperine has been shown to increase the bioavailability of water- and fat-soluble nutrients, particularly L-selenomethionine.
