Cod liver oil food supplement, a source of vitamins, minerals and omega-3.
Cod Liver Oil is a useful supplement against rickets, a bone calcification defect caused by a reduced intake of vitamin D, fortunately rare today, but which in the past affected many children.
Cod liver oil has returned to the forefront thanks to the great nutritional importance attributed to omega-3 fatty acids, of which it is particularly rich.
On average, the liver weight of an adult cod is 2.5-2.6 grams per 100 grams of fish; its oil content is around 30%.
The anti-rachitic action of cod liver oil, together with the effect of sunlight, improves intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphorus and increases its deposition in teeth and bones, making them less prone to fractures.
For this reason, it is considered a valid dietary supplement in the treatment of osteoporosis and osteomalacia.
The benefits of cod liver oil
Cod liver oil was, and in some cases still is, used in the presence of hypovitaminosis due to vitamin A and D deficiencies.
Cod obtains vitamin D by feeding on plankton that live close to the surface and which in turn synthesize it by exploiting the sunlight that filters through the water.
Outside of this food, food sources of vitamin D are few in number and limited mostly ruminant liver, egg yolk, cheese, mushrooms, and sardines.
It must be said, however, that the requirement for this vitamin is very low, since the body is able to synthesize it in the skin following exposure to the sun.
The classic symptom associated with a vitamin A deficiency is impaired twilight vision, or a loss of acuity.
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
Keep out of reach of children under 3 years of age.
Supplements should not be considered a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
