Role of sugars
Human energy metabolism is based, in short, on the biochemistry of the transformation of sugars into energy. and use of two types of sugars: hexoses (with 6 carbon atoms) and pentoses (or 5 carbon atoms). The former, through glycolysis, are transformed into pyruvate and acetyl-CoA, which then enter the Krebs cycle and provide ATP, but also support various metabolisms related to the cycle itself (beta-oxidation of fatty acids, the urea cycle, amino acid synthesis, gluconeogenesis, etc.).
The pentoses are partly oriented towards the synthesis of nucleotides (RNA, etc.).
Role of amino acids
Amino acids are quaternary organic compounds formed from carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen: some of them also contain sulfur atoms, an element that is of significant nutritional importance. They perform three different functions in the body:
* they constitute the basic elements of proteins, in which they are linked to each other by peptide bonds
* as such or in forms derived from them, they give rise to some hormones and chemical mediators, as well as other molecules of biological importance
* they represent an essential source of energy for the body
At the tissue level, the presence of an appropriate and balanced protein content is necessary for adequate regeneration and/or repair of cellular structures.
Role of vitamins
Some enzymes are active only in the presence of cofactors or coenzymes (metal ions: NA?, K?, Mg²?, Ca²?; organic molecules such as FAD, FMN, NAD, NADP) provide essential elements for the reaction to proceed (electrons, H?, O?, energy) that bind They are reversibly chemically modified, introduced in catalytic quantities, and must be reintroduced into the catalytic cycle.
Many coenzymes have water-soluble B vitamins as precursors.
Vitamins are molecules that perform their activity in very small quantities. They are essential for humans and many animals, as they cannot be synthesized from simpler molecules but must be ingested through food.
