Griffonia is native to the humid tropical areas of Africa (Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo) and represents the main source for the production of 5-HTP-based supplements.

The seed, called “African bean” It has a disc-shaped, iridescent black color and contains 7 to 10% 5-hydroxytryptophan.

The beneficial activities of this plant are due to the presence, in the seeds of the griffonia, of 5-hydroxytryptophan, an amino acid that in the body acts as a precursor of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter whose deficiency is associated with numerous disorders including insomnia, migraines, anxiety and depression.
