Product Description

Drug for the prevention and control of Giardia infections and for the treatment of the main roundworms and flatworms, suitable for dogs and cats.

Indications

Panacur 250 mg from Msd Animal Health is a veterinary medicine, in tablet or paste form, for the prevention and control of Giardia infections and for the treatment of the main roundworms and flatworms. Fenbendazole is an anthelmintic effective against gastrointestinal nematodes and tapeworms in dogs and cats. It is also indicated for the prevention and control of Giardia infestations in dogs.

In particular, it is indicated in dogs for the treatment of infestations by:

  • Roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), mature stages;
  • Hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala), mature stages;
  • Whipworms (Trichuris vulpis), mature stages;
  • Tapeworms (Taenia pisiformis), mature stages.

In cats for the following infestations:

  • Roundworms (Toxocara mystax), mature stages;
  • Hookworms (Ancylostoma tubaeforme), immature and mature stages;
  • Tapeworms (Taenia hydatigena), mature stages.

It is recommended to repeat the treatment against ascarids and cestodes taking into account the development cycle of the parasite from larva to mature stage.

Directions for use and Dosage

Administration should be carried out orally. To ensure administration of a correct dose, body weight must be determined as accurately as possible. The dosage for dogs and cats is 50 mg of fenbendazole/kg of body weight/day.

Panacur 250 mg tablets:

  • ½ tablet (= 125 mg fenbendazole) per 2.5 kg of body weight;
  • 1 tablet (= 250 mg fenbendazole) per 5 kg of body weight.

Treatment of dogs

Adult dogs: crush the tablets and mix them with food. It is also possible to dissolve the tablets in a little water and mix everything with the food.
Puppies: crush or dissolve the tablets in a little water and mix them with the food.

Treatment of cats

Adult dogs and puppies: dissolve the tablets in a little water and mix them with the food. It is advisable to administer the tablets by mixing them with the first part of the daily food ration to ensure their complete intake. It is not recommended to administer Panacur tablets as is or dissolved in water to fasting animals to avoid a possible decrease in efficacy. Avoid administering milk at the same time.

Warnings

Panacur tablets have a neutral flavor. For both animal species, in order to achieve effective control of gastrointestinal nematodes, tapeworms and giardiasis in dogs, treatment should be carried out based on the results of the fecal parasitological examination.

Care should be taken to avoid the following practices which may increase the risk of developing resistance and could ultimately result in ineffective therapy:

  • Too frequent and repeated use of anthelmintics of the same class, for too long a period of time.
  • Underdosing of the product, which may cause the development of resistance. This may be due to underestimation of the animal's body weight, incorrect administration of the veterinary medicinal product, or loss of calibration of the dispenser.

To help delay the development of resistance, users are advised to verify the success of treatment (e.g. by checking clinical appearance, faecal egg count). Suspected clinical cases of resistance to anthelmintics should be further investigated using appropriate tests (e.g. faecal egg count reduction tests). If the test results clearly indicate resistance to a particular anthelmintic, an anthelmintic belonging to another pharmacological class and with a different mechanism of action should be used.
