Paste for oral use for dogs and cats for the prevention and control of Giardia infections and for the treatment of the main roundworms and flatworms.
Panacur Paste 187.5 mg/g from Msd Animal Health is a veterinary drug for the treatment of gastrointestinal nematode infections in kittens and adult cats and in puppies and adult dogs. Also in dogs as an aid in the control of the protozoan Giardia.
Kittens and adult cats:
Infestation by the following gastrointestinal nematodes: Toxocara cati (adult stages), Ancylostoma tubaeforme (immature and adult stages).
Puppies and adult dogs:
Infestation by the following gastrointestinal parasites: Toxocara canis (adult stages), Ancylostoma caninum (adult stages), Uncinaria stenocephala (immature and adult stages) and Giardia spp.
Fenbendazole 187.5 mg
Methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate 1.7 mg, Propyl-4-hydroxybenzoate 0.16 mg
Panacur should be administered directly into the mouth after a meal by squeezing the paste from the syringe onto the base of the tongue. Alternatively, the paste can also be mixed with food. Each syringe contains 4.8 g of paste, equivalent to 900 mg of fenbendazole. To prepare the syringe for first use, remove the syringe tip and rotate the dosing ring until the edge of the ring facing the tip lines up with the zero (0) on the plunger. Press the plunger and discard any spilled paste. The syringe is ready for use. The plunger has 18 markings, and each unit corresponds to 50 mg of fenbendazole. Determine the number of units needed based on the animal's body weight. Rotate the plunger ring to the corresponding marking. A maximum of 6 doses of the product can be withdrawn in a period of 28 days after first opening the primary packaging.
Adult cats
The dose is 75 mg of fenbendazole/kg body weight (bw)/day for two consecutive days. The daily dose for 2 kg bw corresponds to 3 markings on the plunger. The resulting treatment schedule is as follows:
| The resulting treatment schedule is as follows: | |
| up to 2 kg bw | 3 syringe marks per day for 2 days |
| from 2.1 to 4 kg bw | 6 syringe marks per day for 2 days |
| from 4.1 to 6 kg bw | 9 syringe marks per day for 2 days |
Puppies, cats, and adult dogs
The dose is 50 mg of fenbendazole/kg bw/day for three consecutive days.
| The treatment schedule is as follows: | |
| from 1.0 to 2 kg b.w. | 2 syringe marks per day for 3 days |
| from 2.1 to 3 kg b.w. | 3 syringe marks per day for 3 days |
| from 3.1 to 4 kg b.w. | 4 syringe marks per day for 3 days |
| 4.1 to 5 kg b.w. | 5 syringe notches per day for 3 days |
| 5.1 to 6 kg b.w. | 6 syringe notches per day for 3 days |
In particular, under conditions of high infestation, the elimination of Ancylostoma tubaeforme in adult cats, Giardia spp. in dogs and roundworms, especially in puppies and kittens, may be incomplete in individual cases and, therefore, a potential risk of infestation for humans persists. Therefore, a stool examination should be performed and, based on the results, further treatment should be administered if necessary, according to the veterinarian's judgment.
Warnings for correct administration
To ensure administration of a correct dose, body weight should be determined as accurately as possible. Panacur is suitable for use in animals weighing up to 6 kg, regardless of their age. If the animal weighs more than 6 kg, more than one syringe should be used.
For both animal species, in order to achieve effective control of gastrointestinal nematodes and giardiasis in dogs, treatment should be carried out based on the results of the stool parasitological examination. Care should be taken to avoid the following practices, which may increase the risk of resistance development and may ultimately lead to treatment failure:
To help delay the development of resistance, users are advised to verify the success of treatment (e.g. by checking clinical appearance, fecal egg counts). Suspected clinical cases of anthelmintic resistance should be further investigated using appropriate tests (e.g. faecal egg count reduction tests). If the test results clearly indicate resistance to a particular anthelmintic, an anthelmintic belonging to another pharmacological class and with a different mechanism of action must be used.
Special precautions to be taken by the person administering the veterinary medicinal product to animals:
Avoid contact with skin, eyes and mucous membranes. In case of contact with skin and/or eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water. Wash hands after use. Do not eat, drink or smoke during administration.
Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
Mild gastrointestinal signs (such as vomiting and diarrhoea) may occur in very rare cases in dogs and cats. The frequency of adverse reactions is defined using the following conventions:
Benzimidazoles have a wide safety margin. No specific symptoms of overdose are known. No specific action is required.
Pregnancy:
Do not use in pregnant bitches up to the 39th day of pregnancy. Panacur can be used for the treatment of pregnant bitches during the last third of pregnancy. However, since rare cases of teratogenic effects caused by oxfendazole, a metabolite of fenbendazole, cannot be completely ruled out, use only according to the benefit/risk assessment by the responsible veterinarian. Do not use in pregnant cats.
Lactation:
The product can be used in lactating bitches and cats.
