Anthelmintic for dogs indicated for the treatment and prevention of roundworm and hookworm infestations in puppies and adult dogs.

Indications

Nemex 21.62 Mg/g by Zoetis is a paste for oral use for dogs indicated for the treatment and prevention of roundworm and hookworm infestations in puppies and adult dogs.

Composition

Active ingredients

Pyrantel pamoate 21.62 mg/g (equivalent to 7.5 mg/g of pyrantel base).

Excipients

Precipitated silica, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, sorbitol solution, sodium alginate, water depurata.

Directions for use and Dosage

14.5 mg of pyrantel pamoate equal to 5 mg of pyrantel base per kg of the dog's body weight.

Directions for administration:

10 g tube: two cm of paste for every kg of body weight. It should be administered in a single dose without keeping the dog fasting and without requiring it to follow a particular diet. Its palatability allows the preparation to be spread directly into the animal's mouth or, in the case of unsociable animals, mixed with food.

Prophylaxis: prophylaxis is carried out to keep the dog free of worms and avoid the risk of infestation for humans (especially children) from dogs affected by worms. Furthermore, prophylactic treatment allows the dog to: be more resistant to other diseases; tolerate fatigue better, resulting in better performance; have a more alert sense; have a better overall appearance, particularly a shinier coat.

Prophylaxis program:

1. Puppies: one treatment at 10-14 days of age, to be repeated between the fourth and eighth week of age. It is particularly important to remember the primary importance of pre-vaccination treatment, as the presence of parasites can interfere with the establishment of solid vaccine immunity.
2. Females: one treatment 15 days before mating; a second treatment one week before giving birth; a third treatment 4 weeks after giving birth. This series of treatments aims to prevent infestation of puppies during pregnancy and subsequently, after birth, through colostrum and milk sucked from the mother during the first days of life.
3. Competition dogs: one treatment 15-20 days before the competition.
4. Hunting dogs: one treatment 15-20 days before the hunting season.
5. All other dogs: one treatment in early spring, to be repeated in early autumn. Treatment of roundworm and hookworm infestations: treatment must be carried out immediately whenever the presence of parasites is confirmed and repeated after 2-3 weeks.

Warnings

In case of difficulty with dosing, for example when it is impossible to weigh the dog, the dose of Nemex to be administered must be rounded up. In fact, the preparation does not fully demonstrate its therapeutic efficacy below the indicated dosage; on the contrary, high doses have no contraindications. Parasite resistance to any class of anthelmintics may develop after frequent and repeated use of an anthelmintic of that class. To achieve effective parasite control, treatment should be based on the results of a parasitological examination of the feces. The medicine has a wide safety margin and can be safely administered to subjects of all ages, in any physiological state (including pregnant and lactating females), and in any state and severity of disease.

Special precautions to be taken by the person administering the veterinary medicinal product to animals: Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wash skin in contact with the product with water. Use gloves in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to one of the excipients.

Interactions

Do not use simultaneously with other cholinergics or cholinesterase inhibitors. Piperazine antagonizes the effect of pyrantel.

Contraindications

Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to one of the excipients.

Overdose

The product has an excellent safety profile and any overdose is not capable of producing any adverse reactions either in puppies or in pregnant or lactating females or in adult dogs. Even when administered in doses 40 times higher than the therapeutic dose and for several days, it does not present symptoms of intolerance (vomiting, weight loss).

Pregnancy and lactation

The product is specifically indicated for use during pregnancy and lactation. In clinical trials using higher than recommended doses, no side effects were observed or reported.
