Indications

Laevolac is a laxative syrup based on lactulose. Lactulose is a synthetic sugar that, after ingestion, draws water and salts from the intestine, increasing stool mass and stimulating intestinal contractions.

For this reason, the use of Laevolac laxative is an ideal treatment for short-term occasional constipation in adults and children, helping to regulate intestinal function.

Composition

100 ml of syrup contain: lactulose 66.7 g. Excipients: sorbic acid (E 200); purified water.

Laevolac Dosage and Directions for Use

Laevolac syrup should be taken according to your age, according to the dosage shown below.

For adults:

•  In case of mild constipation, the initial dose is 1 tablespoon per day; the maintenance dose is 2 teaspoons per day;
• In case of severe constipation, the initial dose is 1-2 tablespoons per day; the maintenance dose is 2-3 teaspoons per day;
• In case of obstinate constipation, the initial dose is 2-3 tablespoons per day; The maintenance dose is 2-4 teaspoons per day.

For children:

• 1-6 years: The initial dose is 1-2 teaspoons per day; the maintenance dose is 1 teaspoon per day;
• 6-14 years: The initial dose is 1 tablespoon per day; The maintenance dose is 2 teaspoons per day.

For infants:

• initial dose: 1 teaspoon per day;
• maintenance dose: 1 teaspoon per day.

1 tablespoon = 15 ml = 10 g of lactulose. 1 teaspoon = 5 ml = 3.3 g of lactulose.

The correct dose is the minimum sufficient to produce easy evacuation of soft stools. It is advisable to initially use the minimum recommended doses. When necessary, the dose can then be increased, but without ever exceeding the maximum indicated. Preferably take in the evening.

Warnings

Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no longer than 1 hour. 7 days. Use for longer periods requires a doctor's prescription after adequate evaluation of the individual case.

Abuse of laxatives (frequent or prolonged use or with excessive doses) can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium), and other essential nutrients. In more severe cases, dehydration or a decrease in blood potassium may occur, which can lead to cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction, especially in the case of concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics, or corticosteroids.

Abuse of laxatives, especially contact laxatives (stimulant laxatives), can cause serious and life-threatening complications. cause dependence (and, therefore, the possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation and loss of normal intestinal functions (intestinal atony).

Since the active ingredient of Laevolac is a non-absorbable sugar, at the recommended doses it is not contraindicated in diabetic patients.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

There are no adequate studies regarding the use of Laevolac, as with other laxatives in pregnancy. Therefore, the medicine should be used with caution and under the direct supervision of a doctor during pregnancy, as well as during breastfeeding.
