Product Description

Microenemas for adults based on Glycerol, to be used for short-term treatment of occasional constipation.

Indications

Carlo Erba Microenemas are useful for occasional and transient constipation. Glycerol is the active ingredient in these microenemas for adults and acts by softening the stool and performing a mild irritant action, which stimulates intestinal contractions and the expulsion of stool.

Ingredients and Composition

Carlo Elba Glycerol Adults 6.75 g rectal solution. Each single-dose container contains:

  • Active ingredient: Glycerol 6.75 g.
  • Excipients: Chamomile fluid extract, Mallow fluid extract, Wheat starch, Purified water.

Directions for use and Dosage

The correct dose is the minimum sufficient to produce easy evacuation. It is advisable to initially use the minimum recommended doses:

  • Adults and adolescents (12-18 years): one adult microenema as needed, up to a maximum of 1 or 2 doses per day.
  • Children under twelve years: use adult microenemas only after consulting your doctor.

To use Carlo Elba Microenemas, you must remove the safety cannula cover from the single-dose container by placing your index finger and thumb on the round ring above the bellows and, with the other hand, bend the cannula cover until it detaches from the body of the container. During this operation, never grasp the bellows, otherwise the medicine will leak out before use.

You may also have to take a shower. It may be helpful to lubricate the cannula with a drop of the solution before inserting it into the rectum and pressing the bellows. Remove the cannula while holding down the bellows.

Each container should be used for a single administration; any residual medicine should be discarded.

Take at least 2 hours before or after meals, as the medicine may interfere with the absorption of nutrients and vitamins. Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days. Combining micro-enemas with a diet rich in liquids promotes the effect of the medicine.

Warnings

Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days. Use for longer periods of time requires a doctor's prescription after adequate evaluation of the individual case.

The treatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires medical intervention for diagnosis, prescription of medications, and monitoring during therapy. It is also advisable for elderly or unhealthy subjects to consult their doctor before using the medicine.

Abuse of laxatives can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium), and other essential nutrients.

In the most severe cases of abuse, dehydration or hypokalemia may occur, which can lead to cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction, especially in the case of concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics, or corticosteroids. The abuse of laxatives, especially contact laxatives (stimulant laxatives), can cause dependence (and, therefore, the possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation, and loss of normal intestinal functions (intestinal atony).

In episodes of constipation, it is recommended first of all to correct eating habits by integrating the daily diet with an adequate intake of fiber and water. When using laxatives, it is advisable to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water or other liquids a day to help soften the stool.

Contraindications and side effects

  • Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
  • Acute abdominal pain or pain of unknown origin.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Intestinal obstruction or stenosis.
  • Rectal bleeding of unknown origin.
  • Acute haemorrhoidal crisis with pain and bleeding.
  • Severe dehydration.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

No adequate and well-controlled studies have been carried out on the use of the medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Although there are no obvious contraindications to the use of the medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it is recommended to take the medicine only when necessary and under medical supervision.

Interactions

No specific interaction studies have been performed. It is known that laxatives can reduce the residence time in the intestine, and consequently also the absorption of other drugs taken orally at the same time. It is therefore recommended, after taking an oral medicine, to wait at least 2 hours before taking a laxative.

Storage

Store in the original packaging to protect the medicine from moisture and away from direct sources of heat.
