Product Description

Food supplement based on Arginine, Taurine, Citrulline, Carnitine, Ornithine, Vitamin E, Coenzyme Q10, Zinc and Selenium.

Indications

Medifert Plus is composed of:

  • Taurine: stimulates the endogenous synthesis of testosterone. In humans, the best-known role of taurine is its involvement in the formation of conjugated bile acid complexes in the liver. Recent observational studies suggest a role for taurine in spermatogenesis in relation to its antioxidant properties, sperm membrane stabilization, sperm motility factor, anti-apoptotic action and stimulation of endogenous testosterone synthesis. An animal model study confirms these preliminary data, indicating that taurine is able to suppress the deterioration of testicular function in relation to its antioxidant and apoptotic inhibition action (12).
  • Coenzyme Q10: improves sperm quality thanks to its high antioxidant action.
Coenzyme Q10 belongs to a family of substances called ubiquinones, lipophilic compounds involved in electron transport and energy production at the mitochondrial level. Coenzyme Q10 has an antioxidant action at the cellular and mitochondrial membrane level, exerting a protective action.
Oxidant radical species play a defined role in the pathogenesis of male infertility. The role of coenzyme Q10 in energy metabolism at the level of the testicular and sperm structures, and its related antioxidant role, are the basis of the important role it plays in the production of normal seminal fluid, confirmed by studies that highlight a direct correlation between concentrations of Coenzyme Q10 at the sperm level and sperm motility (15). It is highlighted that an administration of Coenzyme Q10 is able to increase the level of ubiquinone and ubiquinol, its reduced form, in the seminal level, resulting in a significant improvement in seminal and sperm properties (16).
  • L-Arginine: Various actions of L-arginine can be explained by its role as a precursor of nitric oxide (NO), which is produced by all tissues of the body and plays fundamental functions in the cardiovascular system, the immune system and the nervous system. NO is produced from L-arginine through the enzyme NO synthase (NOS). Preliminary data indicate that L-arginine supplementation may be useful in the treatment of some forms of male infertility and in cases of erectile dysfunction (6,7,8,9).
  • L-Acetyl Carnitine Hydrochloride: are precursors of L-arginine. L-acetyl carnitine carnitine hydrochloride represents a bioavailable source of L-carnitine. Preliminary studies indicate that acetyl carnitine intake can exert a neuroprotective and cardioprotective effect and an increase in sperm motility, in relation to its role as a ready-to-use energy source (10).
The protective role of L-carnitine and L-arginine on seminal quality parameters and oxidative stress in relation to damage deriving from chemotherapy has been investigated in an animal model; the result indicates that the concomitant supplementation of the two nutrients leads to a reduced cytotoxic damage to the sperm components (11).
  • L-Citruline malate and L-Ornithine Hydrochloride: The induction of NOS (Nitric Oxide synthase) and the related increase in NO (Nitric Oxide) is directly involved in improved sperm motility. L-citrulline and L-ornithine are precursors of L-arginine, thus resulting in an indirect increase in the production of endogenous NO (13,14). Preliminary data indicate that L-arginine supplementation, and its role in NOS, may be useful in the treatment of some forms of male infertility and in cases of erectile dysfunction (6,7,8,9).
  • Zinc: contributes to normal fertility, normal reproduction and the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood. Zinc is an essential element for health, being a critical component of numerous enzymes and transcription factors involved in the response to DNA damage and its repair; an inadequate zinc intake negatively influences gene expression, DNA and RNA synthesis and cell division. Zinc also exerts a direct protective action on proteins and lipids by increasing the action of catalase and inducing the expression of metallothionein.
The structural, regulatory and catalytic role of zinc is known in many enzymatic systems, in particular zinc is involved in acid-base metabolism, particularly important at the testicular level for normal sperm growth. Spermatogenesis appears to be a zinc-dependent process and seminal fluid is particularly rich in zinc; a reduced zinc intake is associated with a low level of numerous hormones involved in reproductive functions and spermatogenesis, including testosterone. (1,2)
  • Selenium: contributes to normal spermatogenesis. Selenium is a micronutrient essential for the well-being of the body; it is part of the main metabolic pathways and antioxidant defense systems and correct immunological function depends on it. In mammals, selenium is essential for normal reproductive function and in particular for the vitality and motility of spermatozoa. In seminal fluid, selenium-containing glutathione peroxidase plays a fundamental role in the removal of hydrogen peroxide and ROS, protecting cellular structures and newly formed spermatozoa from oxidative damage (3,4).
  • Vitamin E: contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin and is an essential nutrient for humans. In body lipids and particularly in cell membranes, vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, preventing the propagation of free radicals with a scavenger action, protecting polyunsaturated fatty acids present in membrane phospholipids and plasma lipoproteins from oxidation. A dietary intake of vitamin E has a beneficial effect on the protection of DNA, proteins and body lipids from oxidative stress (5). At the testicular level, a correct intake of vitamin E protects the structures responsible for sperm production from oxidation.
