 Alpha-linolenic acid
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a precursor of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid of plant origin that is converted within the body into DHA and EPA, the biologically active long-chain fatty acids in mammals. Several studies have shown that DHA is DHA is important for the development of the brain, eyes, and nervous system in newborns, also protecting against cardiac damage. During the first three months of pregnancy, the fetus does not produce DHA on its own, so it is essential that it be made available through the diet during this period. Dietary availability is also important during and after breastfeeding. EPA can also be converted into DHA through elongation and beta-oxidation.
