Haematococcus pluvialis is a microalgae of the Chlamydomonadeae family, a particularly concentrated natural source of astaxanthin.
Astaxanthin is a xanthophyll (a class of carotenoids) common among aquatic animals (fish and crustaceans) to which it gives a characteristic pink pigmentation.
Astaxanthin has a slightly polar structure that allows it to assume a specific orientation in the cell membrane to best perform its function.
