• Cross-linked Hyaluronic Acid:Cross-linked hyaluronic acid is known for its use as a dermal filler injected by dermatologists directly into the skin to physically fill wrinkles. Inserted into cosmetic formulations for topical use, this active ingredient nevertheless demonstrates the ability to immediately fill wrinkles. Not present in nature, it is modified in the laboratory using biotechnological techniques. The result is a hyaluronic acid with the molecules thus obtained. Cross-linked hyaluronic acid is a complex compound formed by cross-linked particles that are bound together to form a compact block that makes it more viscous and long-lasting, because the enzyme that degrades it, hyaluronidase, has a harder time dismantling it. Cross-linked hyaluronic acid, compared to non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid, also has superior water-binding properties, comparable to those of a super-absorbent polymer. In vitro tests have demonstrated the ability of a W/O emulsion containing cross-linked hyaluronic acid particles to absorb water in a quantity equal to one and a half times the volume of the emulsion itself, with an increase in viscosity and particle size.
