Medivet Canzocal + BMP is a biological preparation formulated to support skeletal and joint health.
The skeleton is one of the most important systems of the body, on which movement and height depend in both humans and animals.
Until recently, it was thought that the skeletal system was a static, bradytrophic structure, subject to very few metabolic changes. The development of new methodologies that allow us to explain certain biochemical processes and the morphological ultrastructure of tissues (1) has demonstrated that neither cartilage nor bone are inert structures but that, on the contrary, these tissues perform particular functions and are endowed with specific properties.
Articular cartilage is devoid of blood vessels and nerves. It is a matrix with a single type of cell, the chondrocyte. During growth, chondrocytes produce an abundant quantity of ground substance, in which they remain throughout their life. In adult life, chondrocytes are responsible for the metabolism of specific matrix components, cartilage collagen and proteoglycans.
This fact is worth remembering because chondrocytes cannot divide phenotypically in adult tissue. Therefore, maintaining the structure and functional state of these cells is extremely important, as the integrity of the alar cartilage and frictionless movement at the joints themselves depend on it (2).
Bone is an extremely dynamic tissue, constantly undergoing remodeling thanks to a complex interaction between osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Any factor capable of disrupting the interaction between these two cell types causes bone defects that can lead to skeletal deformations and mobility limitations. Furthermore, the skeleton is an important deposit of calcium and other minerals that are released on demand.
During the first 6 months of a puppy's life, bone formation and remodeling are at their peak. When the supply of minerals and nutrients to bone tissue is insufficient during this period of skeletal growth, metabolic dysfunctions at the bone level frequently occur. These metabolic disorders (developmental orthopedic injuries) are diagnosed fairly regularly in puppies, but also in foals and yearlings, precisely during periods of rapid growth. The pathogenesis of these disorders is has often been attributed to excessive intakes of calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, and protein (see studies by Hedehammer et al.) (1). More than 15 years ago, Hazewinkel et al. studied the devastating effects of excessive calcium administration in large breed dogs, Great Danes: the dogs reported hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, hypermineralization, and reduced osteoclast activity, resulting in insufficient remodeling of the growing skeleton. Calcium administered by injection can cause irreparable damage.
On the contrary, for an athletic animal to withstand the stress of training and racing, optimal bone formation and mineralization are of great importance. The structural elasticity of the bone requires specific nutrients that the body must be able to access.
Medivet canzocal + bmp contains bone-specific proteins, mineral substances, and biologically active compounds that stimulate bone cells (3). The combination of these factors justifies its superiority over supplements based exclusively on calcium. The organic fraction contained in Medivet canzocal + bmp consists of collagen, proteoglycans, bone proteins, and polypeptides such as growth factors and osteocalcin.
Medivet canzocal + bmp is manufactured according to a pharmaceutical process designed to preserve the mineral structures and organic components of the starting material. The microcrystalline form of calcium and phosphorus allows for a slow and continuous release of these factors over a long period. Pharmacologically, this slow release is of great importance: it prevents strong plasma fluctuations of mineral substances that can overload the renal capacity. renal function, and prevents hormonal imbalances such as PTH overshoots. The calcium released by Medivet Canzocal + BMP is absorbed through the intestinal mucosa with the help of organic transport molecules. The absorbed calcium is present in the serum in the form of Ca-protein complexes and ionized Ca++.
Modern diagnostic techniques have revealed that microlesions or fatigue fractures are frequent causes of lameness in racing greyhounds. In this case, the osteogenic factors contained in Medivet Canzocal + BMP are of great importance because they promote rapid and complete healing of bone lesions with the formation of perfectly mineralized bone callus.
The organic fractions contained in the product have a beneficial effect not only on the metabolism of bone cells, but also on mesenchymal cells.
