Ocular Solution
Composition:
5 ml of solution contain: Active ingredient: Nedocromil sodium 100 mg. For a full list of excipients, see 6.1.
Excipients
Benzalkonium chloride; disodium edetate; sodium chloride; purified water.
Therapeutic indications
Prophylaxis of allergic eye diseases.
Contraindications
Kovilen eye drops are contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity. Known to contain nedocromil sodium, benzalkonium chloride, or any of the excipients.
Dosage
One drop in each eye 2-4 times daily. Treatment should not exceed 8 weeks.
Warnings and Precautions
Patients should be advised not to wear soft contact lenses during treatment with Kovilen eye drops. Benzalkonium chloride, a component of the formulation, may accumulate in soft contact lenses. This preservative is then slowly released and may cause corneal irritation. Patients who wear rigid or gas-permeable contact lenses during therapy with Kovilen eye drops should remove the lenses before instilling the drops. To allow for even distribution of the solution in the conjunctiva, lenses should be reinserted only 10 minutes after instillation. If multiple topical ophthalmological medications are being used, they should be applied at least 5 minutes apart. After administration of Kovilen eye drops to patients with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, symptomatic relief occurs rapidly. In most patients, the therapeutic effect is evident within one hour of administration. The efficacy and safety of Kovilen in children under 6 years of age and in the elderly have not been established. Once opened, avoid external contamination of the contents. Use within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.
Interactions
No harmful interactions with other drugs have been described in humans or animals. Specifically, no interactions have been reported with other ophthalmological or nasal preparations, oral antihistamine therapy, or inhaled or oral asthma therapies.
