Decongestant nasal spray. Useful in case of colds.
Equimet nasal spray is used as a decongestant of the nasal mucosa (clears a stuffy nose), especially in case of colds.
100 ml of solution contain: Oxymetazoline hydrochloride 0.05 g. One spray corresponds to 0.1 ml of solution and contains 0.05 mg of oxymetazoline.
For the full list of excipients, see 6.1.
Benzalkonium chloride, Potassium dihydrogen phosphate, Anhydrous disodium hydrogen phosphate, Purified water.
Known hypersensitivity to oxymetazoline or other components of the product, prostatic hypertrophy, heart disease, and severe arterial hypertension. Glaucoma, hyperthyroidism. Do not administer during and within two weeks of treatment with antidepressant drugs. The drug is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age.
Adults and children over 12 years of age: One spray in each nostril every 6-12 hours, if necessary. Do not exceed 4 days of treatment unless otherwise directed by your doctor. To use, remove the plastic cap, insert the tip of the bottle into the nostril, and press quickly and firmly, breathing deeply through the nose. Do not exceed the recommended doses.
In patients with cardiovascular disease, especially those with hypertension, the use of nasal decongestants should be subject to the doctor's judgment on a case-by-case basis. Prolonged use of vasoconstrictors can alter the normal function of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses, also leading to drug addiction.
Repeated applications for long periods may be harmful. Use with caution in the first months of pregnancy and, due to the risk of urinary retention, in the elderly. The use, especially if prolonged, of topical products may give rise to sensitization phenomena: in this case, it is necessary to discontinue treatment and institute appropriate therapy. If there is no complete therapeutic response within a few days, consult your doctor; in any case, treatment should not be continued for more than 4 days. Strictly adhere to the recommended doses.
It must not be used orally. If accidentally ingested or if used for a long time in excessive doses, the product can cause toxicity. It should be kept out of reach of children, as accidental ingestion can cause severe sedation. Avoid contact of the liquid with the eyes. Caution for those who participate in sports: the product contains substances prohibited for doping. Any use other than those listed, in terms of dosage schedule and administration route, is prohibited.
The product can cause local rebound sensitization and congestion of the mucous membranes. Due to rapid absorption of oxymetazoline through inflamed mucous membranes, systemic effects may occur, consisting of arterial hypertension, reflex bradycardia, headache, and urination disorders. Occasionally, irritation and dryness of the throat and mouth may be observed.
In case of overdose, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, photophobia, severe headache, chest tightness and, in children, hypothermia and severe central nervous system depression with marked sedation may occur, requiring the adoption of adequate emergency measures. Local irritation and rebound congestion of the mucous membranes may be observed. Treatment should be symptomatic only.
Use with caution in the first months of pregnancy and during breastfeeding, after having appropriately evaluated the risk/benefit ratio.
