Active ingredients
100 ml of solution contain. Active ingredients: N-methylbenzoquinoline methylsulfate 0.300 g, thonzylamine hydrochloride 0.100 g. For the full list of excipients, see section 6.1.
Excipients
Sodium chloride, sodium borate, carboxymethylcellulose, p-oxybenzoic esters, purified water.
Therapeutic indications
Prevents occupational and occasional photophthalmic irritation and lesions. Therefore, its use is indicated for all those (brassers, athletes, etc.) who are subjected to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays and very intense lights. It reduces irritation caused by light diffraction in contact lens wearers. It is indicated as a curative in all conditions in which the predominant symptom is photophobia, actinic ophthalmia, electric ophthalmia, keratitis, iritis.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or to any of the excipients listed in paragraph 6.1. Children under three years of age. Subjects with narrow-angle glaucoma and other serious eye diseases. Patients undergoing antidepressant therapy.
Dosage
Instil one drop twice, five minutes apart, before exposure to excessively bright light (ultraviolet rays, intense sun, strong artificial lights). Repeat the instillation after approximately three hours if exposure continues. For contact lens wearers, one drop three times a day. In case of severe photophobia, instillation can also be performed every two hours.
Warnings and precautions
If symptoms persist or worsen after a short period of treatment, consult your doctor; in any case, the product should not be used for more than 7 consecutive days, given the possibility that, otherwise, undesirable effects, even of a certain severity, may occur. Infections, pus, foreign bodies in the eye, mechanical, chemical, or heat damage require medical attention. Although the product has poor systemic absorption, it should be used with caution in patients with hypertension, hyperthyroidism, cardiac disorders, and hyperglycemia (diabetes), and in subjects undergoing treatment with antidepressants. If accidentally ingested or used for a long time at excessive doses, the medicine can cause toxicity. The medicine must be kept out of the sight and reach of children as accidental ingestion may cause profound sedation. This medicine contains para-oxybenzoic esters which may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed). Paediatric population: Eye drops should not be used in children under three years of age.
Interactions
There are no known particular interactions or incompatibilities with other ophthalmic medicinal products. Do not use ASCOTODIN at the same time as antidepressant therapy (see section 4.3).
Undesirable effects
The use of the medicine may sometimes cause pupil dilation, systemic effects from absorption (hypertension, cardiac disorders, hyperglycemia), increased intraocular pressure, nausea, headache. Sensitization phenomena may rarely occur. In this case, treatment should be discontinued and a doctor should be consulted so that, if necessary, appropriate therapy can be instituted. Reporting of suspected adverse reactions Reporting suspected adverse reactions that occur after authorization of the medicinal product is important, as it allows continued monitoring of the benefit/risk balance of the medicinal product. Healthcare professionals are asked to report any suspected adverse reactions via the national reporting system at www.agenziafarmaco.gov.it/it/responsabili.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
