Product for skin well-being.
Salicylic Acid is an organic acid derived from salicin, used for the treatment of acne and skin inflammation, blemished skin with enlarged pores, and all conditions related to flaking or hyperkeratosis of the skin, such as dry dandruff, psoriasis, and calluses. Salicylic acid is the main exponent of beta hydroxy acids (BHA), which are exfoliating and keratolytic agents with a different action than the alpha-hydroxy acids used in anti-aging treatments. In chemistry, salicylic acid is called 2-hydroxybenzoic acid and is identified by the molecular formula C7H6O3. The molecule derives from the enzymatic hydrolysis of salicin, a salicylic glucoside extracted from willow (Salix alba). Applied to the skin, salicylic acid acts as an effective keratolytic: the molecule is able to selectively break the protein chain of keratin, abundantly present in corneocytes. Having no effect on other proteins, salicylic acid is able to exfoliate and destroy only the cells of the stratum corneum, thus performing a superficial peeling. Unlike beta-hydroxy acids, having a larger and more lipophilic molecule, it penetrates the pores, freeing the blackhead from its sebum content and also acts as an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and soothing agent. Its main cosmetic properties are:
Salicylic acid also has a good lightening and anti-wrinkle action because by decreasing the cohesive forces of the corneocytes, it promotes the desquamation of hyperpigmented keratinocytes and of the first superficial layer of the epidermis, while at the same time encouraging cell renewal. The result is that the "new" keratinocytes, being less rich in melanin pigment, give the skin a uniform, smooth, firm and luminous appearance. In the formulations, salicylic acid improves the performance of the preservative system. At 0.5% and in an acidic environment, it is considered a true preservative.
Recommended percentage of use: 0.5 to 2% of the preparation. Salicylic acid is poorly soluble in water (2 g/L) and oil but very soluble in alcohol and glycols. Another way to solubilize it is to salify it with a base (for example, sodium bicarbonate, arginine, or sodium hydroxide) to make it soluble. Solubility in water increases as the pH of the preparation increases. Some substances such as trimethiglycine improve its solubility. Salicylic acid at pH 4 or lower acts as an exfoliant at a eudermic pH and maintains its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and soothing properties.
