Xamamina is a dimenhydrinate-based drug, useful in the prevention and treatment of seasickness, airsickness, car sickness, and train sickness.
Indications
Xamamina soft capsules are an antiemetic and antinausea drug that can be used in case of vomiting or nausea, caused by various conditions. In particular, Xamamina can be administered for:
- seasickness;
- carsickness;
- airsickness;
- trainsickness.
Dosage and Directions for Use
In adults, administer 1 soft capsule of Xamamina half an hour before travel; If necessary, repeat the dose after 3-4 hours, up to a maximum of 4 soft capsules in 24 hours. The soft capsule should not be chewed, but swallowed, even without water.
Composition
The active ingredient is dimenhydrinate. One soft capsule contains 50 mg of dimenhydrinate. The other ingredients are: macrogol 400. Capsule shell: gelatin; partially dehydrated liquid sorbitol; sodium ethyl parahydroxybenzoate (E215); sodium propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E217).
Contraindications
Xamamina should not be taken in case of allergy to dimenhydrinate, to other antihistamines or to any of the other ingredients. Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Warnings
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking Xamamina.
If you are taking ototoxic drugs (which cause damage to the ear), you should take this medicine with caution as it may mask the symptoms of ear toxicity.
If you suffer from closed-angle glaucoma (increased pressure within the eye), prostatic hypertrophy (enlargement of the prostate), urinary retention (difficulty urinating), slow intestinal transit (constipation), bronchial asthma, epilepsy, porphyria (a rare inherited disease), you should take this medicine with caution.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Xamamina is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Although no data are available on the use of the product in pregnant women and although the product's teratogenicity appears unlikely, the use of dimenhydrinate during pregnancy is contraindicated. Furthermore, small amounts of dimenhydrinate pass into breast milk. Given the possible adverse effects of the product in infants, the use of dimenhydrinate during breastfeeding is contraindicated.
Interactions
If you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines, inform your doctor or pharmacist before taking Xamamina. Be careful when taking:
- other Central Nervous System depressants, such as alcohol, barbiturates (drugs against depression), other hypnotics (drugs that induce sleep), sedatives or tranquilizers, as concomitant use may increase their sedative effects;
- other anticholinergic drugs, including antidepressants, as concomitant use may increase their effects;
- aminoglycoside antibiotics or other ototoxic drugs, as dimenhydrinate may mask the first symptoms of ear toxicity, which may only become apparent when the damage is irreversible.
The medicine may increase the effects of alcohol. In this case, pay attention if an increase in sedative effects occurs.
Side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
With the use of antihistamines, sedation, drowsiness, dry mouth, sensitivity to light, visual disturbances, urinary disturbances, headache, anorexia, nausea, allergic skin reactions may occur.
Less frequently, dizziness, feeling of weakness, insomnia, euphoria, tremors, convulsions, decreased blood pressure, increased heart rate.
Storage
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date and store below 25°C.
