Medication for the treatment of gastric acidity.

Indications

Maalox Oral Suspension is used for the symptomatic treatment of occasional heartburn and hyperacidity of the stomach.

Ingredients and composition

Active ingredient: magnesium hydroxide 4.00 g; aluminum hydroxide 3.5 g; equivalent to aluminum oxide 2.3 g.
Excipients: Hydrochloric acid (10%), citric acid (monohydrate), mint essence, mannitol (E421), domiphene bromide, sodium saccharin, 70% non-crystallizing liquid sorbitol (E420), 30% hydrogen peroxide solution, and purified water.

Dosage 

Maalox Oral Suspension should be taken in the following doses and directions: swallow 2 to 4 teaspoons or 1-2 sachets of oral suspension 4 times a day, 20-60 minutes after meals and before bedtime, also in water or milk. Shake well before use.

Warnings

Aluminum hydroxide can cause constipation, and an overdose of magnesium salts can cause intestinal hypomotility; high doses of this medicine can cause or worsen intestinal obstruction and ileus in patients at higher risk, such as those with renal impairment, underlying constipation, impaired intestinal motility, children (0 to 24 months), or the elderly. Aluminum hydroxide is not well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and systemic effects are therefore rare in patients with normal renal function. However, excessive doses or long-term use, or even normal doses in patients on diets low in phosphorus or in children (0 to 24 months), can lead to phosphate excretion (due to an aluminum-phosphate bond) accompanied by increased bone resorption and hypercalciuria with the risk of osteomalacia. It is advisable to consult a doctor in case of long-term use or in patients at risk of hypophosphatemia. In patients with renal impairment, plasma levels of aluminum and magnesium tend to increase, causing hyperaluminemia and hypermagnesemia, respectively. In these patients, long-term exposure to high doses of aluminum and magnesium salts may lead to encephalopathy, dementia, microcytic anemia, or worsening of dialysis-induced osteomalacia. Aluminum hydroxide may not be safe in patients with porphyria undergoing hemodialysis. In the presence of severe forms of renal insufficiency, it is advisable to take the product under the direct supervision of a doctor. Prolonged use of the medicine should be avoided in these patients. MAALOX tablets contain sucrose: this should be taken into account in case of diabetes or low-calorie diets. Due to the presence of sucrose, patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption, or sucrose-isomaltase insufficiency should not take MAALOX chewable tablets. MAALOX oral suspension contains parahydroxybenzoates (methyl and propyl parahydroxybenzoate), which may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed). Due to the presence of sorbitol in both the oral suspension and the tablets, patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance should not take MAALOX.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

The medicine should be used only when necessary, under the direct supervision of a doctor, after weighing the expected benefit to the mother against the possible risk to the fetus or infant. Due to limited maternal absorption when taken according to the recommended dosage regimen, aluminum hydroxide and its combinations with magnesium salts are considered compatible with breastfeeding.
