Product Description

Codex lactic ferments in sachets is used for the treatment of intestinal dysbiosis and the symptoms of diarrhea.

Indications

Codex ferments is indicated for:

• intestinal dysbiosis induced by antibiotics and sulphonamides and the vitamin deficiencies caused by them;
• in the case of treatment of acute diarrhea;
• the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome;
• the treatment of candidiasis of the gastrointestinal tract.

Composition

Each sachet of Codex 5 billion contains:

• Active ingredient: Saccharomyces boulardii 5 billion live germs (in the form of 250 mg of freeze-dried powder);
• Excipients: lactose monohydrate, fructose, colloidal anhydrous silica, tutti i frutti flavor.

Dosage and Directions for Use

The medicine should be taken according to the following instructions:

• Adults: 1–2 sachets 2 times a day.
• Children from 0 to 3 years: 1 sachet 2 times a day.
• Children from 3 to 12 years: 1 sachet 3 times a day.

Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor. It is recommended to administer Codex at regular intervals, possibly on an empty stomach or at least 15 minutes before meals. During treatment with antibiotics, administer Codex at the same time. For infants or children, it is recommended to pour the contents of the sachet into a bottle or into a little sugary liquid.

Warnings and precautions

Do not mix Codex with very hot liquids or alcoholic solutions. Given the fungal nature of Saccharomyces boulardii, this drug should not be administered during topical or systemic antifungal therapy.

Treatment of diarrhea is not a substitute for rehydration, when necessary. The amount of rehydration and its route of administration must be commensurate with the severity of the diarrhea and the age and health of the patient.

As with all medicinal products based on living microorganisms, particular care must be taken when handling the product in the presence of patients with a central venous catheter to avoid any contamination by hands and/or airborne spread of spores. In fact, in patients with a central venous catheter, even if not treated with Saccharomyces boulardii, very rare cases of fungemia (spread of yeast in the blood) have been reported, which very often manifests itself with fever and positive blood cultures for Saccharomyces strains. All these cases resolved favorably following treatment with antifungals and, where necessary, removal of the catheter.

Codex contains lactose and fructose and is therefore not suitable for patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose or fructose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. It does not contain gluten.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients. Patients with a central venous catheter. Allergy to yeasts.

Side effects

Rare cases of flatulence have been reported following the administration of Codex, and very rare cases of allergic reactions in the form of facial swelling (angioedema) and/or itching, hives (urticaria) and localized or systemic rash. Furthermore, very rare cases of anaphylactic reaction or shock have been reported.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

There is no reliable information available regarding teratogenicity in animals. No cases of malformations or fetotoxic effects have been reported clinically. However, since data from monitoring pregnant women exposed to the drug are insufficient, all risks cannot be ruled out. Although Saccharomyces boulardii is not absorbed, its administration during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be performed only if strictly necessary under the direct supervision of a doctor who will evaluate the risk/benefit ratio.
