Indications
Aciclovir Sandoz is a cream to be applied to the skin that contains the active ingredient aciclovir belonging to a group of medicines used against viral infections (antivirals). Aciclovir Sandoz is used to treat infections caused by the Herpes simplex virus, both on the lips (cold sores) and on the genitals (primary or recurrent genital herpes). Talk to your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after a few days.
Composition
Active ingredients
Aciclovir: each gram of cream contains 50 mg of aciclovir
Excipients
purified water; propylene glycol; tefose; labrafil; Vaseline oil; polaxamer 407; sodium lauryl sulfate.
How to use and Dosage
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are not sure, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Treatment involves 5 applications a day at approximately 4-hour intervals. Apply Aciclovir Sandoz cream to the lesions, or to the areas where they are developing, as soon as you notice the first symptoms of infection, such as itching, burning, and pain (prodrome or erythema).
Treatment can also be started during the later stages characterized by the appearance of small raised skin bumps (papules) or vesicles. Treatment must continue for at least 4 days for cold sores, and for 5 days for genital herpes.
If there is no healing, treatment can continue for up to 10 days.
Warnings
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Aciclovir Sandoz. Aciclovir Sandoz should not be applied to the eyes or to the mucous membranes inside the mouth or vagina, as it may cause irritation.
Talk to your doctor and use this medicine with caution if you have a weak immune system, as you are more susceptible to infections (for example, if you have AIDS or if you have had a bone marrow transplant). In this case, you may need to take aciclovir by mouth (oral).
Avoid treatment for long periods, as it may cause serious side effects. cause an allergic reaction (sensitization). If this happens, stop treatment immediately and contact your doctor.
Other medicines and Aciclovir Sandoz
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using, have recently used or might use any other medicines. There are no known interactions with other medicines.
Contraindications
Do not use Aciclovir Sandoz:
- if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, propylene glycol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- if you are pregnant or breast-feeding (See section Pregnancy and breast-feeding).
Side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause serious side effects. cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects may occur:
Uncommon: (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
- transient burning or pain;
- moderate dryness and peeling of the skin;
- itching.
Rare: (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)
- redness of the skin (erythema);
- inflammatory reaction of the skin (contact dermatitis), mainly due to the components of the base cream.
Very rare: (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)
- allergic reactions such as angioedema (which appears as swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat and may cause difficulty swallowing and breathing), hives.
Overdose
If you accidentally take too much Aciclovir Sandoz, contact your doctor immediately or go to the emergency department of your nearest hospital.
No cases of overdose have been described. Even if the entire contents of the tube of cream are swallowed, no side effects should occur. If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, use this medicine only if clearly necessary and under the direct supervision of your doctor.
Driving and using machines
There are no data available to establish the effect of the medicine on the ability to drive or use machines.
Components to take into account
This medicine contains 10 g of propylene glycol per 100 g of cream. It may cause skin irritation. Do not use this medicine in children under 4 weeks of age with open wounds or large areas of damaged skin (such as burns) without talking to your doctor or pharmacist.
This medicine contains 1 g of sodium lauryl sulfate per 100 g of cream. Sodium lauryl sulfate may cause skin irritation (stinging or burning sensation) or intensify skin reactions caused by other medicines when applied to the same area.
